Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Knowles Fleet is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.

Baseline emissions footprint

Baseline year: 01/12/22 - 30/11/23
Additional details relating to the baseline emissions calculations.

This was the first year Knowles Fleet worked with a third party (Carbon Neutral Britain) to complete an independent carbon audit across the business. Therefore, the figures below provide a verified baseline from which to measure future progress on emissions reduction.

Our emissions calculations cover Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and Scope 3 emissions where data is currently available. We include all seven Kyoto Protocol Greenhouse Gas groups in our emission footprint figures.

Baseline year emissions: 01/12/22 – 30/11/23
EMISSIONS TOTAL (tCO2e)

As an independent fleet management company, the service we provide is the administration of vehicle fleets and car benefit schemes. We do not purchase or control the actual vehicles. These are owned by leasing companies who are responsible for transportation and maintenance operations. We have not therefore reported on this area of Scope 3 emissions as we do not transport or distribute any purchased products.

Emissions reduction targets

This year’s (2023/24) analysis shows that over the past 12 months, carbon reduction measures across the business have resulted in a 27.76% fall in total emissions, down from 102.46 tCO2e to 74.70 tCO2e. This is three times the annual reduction target set in April 2024 to achieve a 50% fall in emissions by 2030.

To continue our progress, we have adopted the following revised targets to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2040:

  • Achieve an annual 6.25% (6.40 tCO2e) reduction in emissions from our baseline year (2022/23) to 2030.

  • Maintain a further 5% (5.12 tCO2e) fall in total emissions each year to 2040 to reach net zero.

These targets are illustrated in the graph below:

Carbon reduction projects

Completed carbon reduction initiatives

Over the last 12 months we have introduced the following environmental management measures and projects across the business:

  • Committed to a more ambitious net zero target of 2040 in line with NHS Wales’ goal and ahead of NHS England’s 2045 objective.

  • In January 2024, Knowles Fleet achieved ISO 14001:2015 environmental accreditation.

  • Working in partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain, in January 2024 we offset our annual carbon footprint against verified renewable projects across to the world to become a Carbon Neutral Business for the second year running.

  • Focused on cutting emissions from business travel by:

    • Replacing in-person meetings with video conferencing.
    • Introducing electric and hybrid pool cars for business use
    • Encouraging the use of car sharing and public transport.

The above measures have resulted in a 29.1% fall in business travel emissions over the past 12 months, down from 4.06 tCO2e to 2.88 tCO2e. This almost hits our target set in April 2024 to reduce business travel emissions by 30% (1.22 tCO2e) on 2022/23 levels by 2028.

  • Supported the reduction of staff commuting emissions by:

    • Promoting the use of free workplace EV chargers for employees to encourage the take up of electric vehicles.
    • Supporting staff to upgrade to newer, less polluting cars (ideally electric and hybrid) through our own incentivised car benefit scheme.
    • Encouraged car sharing and flexible working arrangements

These measures have seen a 34.6% fall in staff commuting emissions over the past 12 months, down from 58.89 tCO2e to 38.51tCO2e. This already exceeds our target set in April 2024 to cut emissions from staff vehicles by 10% (5.889 tCO2e) on 2022/23 levels by 2027.

  • All office cleaning supplies and personal care items are now purchased (where available) from a local eco-refill shop.

  • Improved our waste management processes ahead of the new Simpler Recycling legislation introduced in March 2025.

  • As an employee owned business, implemented staff ideas to save energy and resources. These include installing Save-a-flush bags in all head office toilet cisterns to potentially save 1.2 litres of water at every flush and adding radiator foil behind all external wall radiators to reduce heat loss.

In the future we hope to implement further measures:

  • Switch to a renewable electricity supplier when our current fixed rate tariff ends.

  • As a rural business, evaluate our options to replace our current oil heating system with a new low carbon, futureproof alternative and improve the energy efficiency of our head office building.

  • Further improve our waste management programme and build greater awareness amongst staff of the impact of their actions on waste reduction.

  • Install hand dryers at our head office to eliminate the use of paper towels.
