Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Knowles Fleet is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

Baseline emissions footprint

Baseline year: 01/12/22 - 30/11/23
Additional details relating to the baseline emissions calculations.

This is the first year Knowles Fleet has worked with a third party (Carbon Neutral Britain) to complete an independent carbon audit across the business. Therefore, the figures below will now be used as a verified baseline to measure future progress on emissions reduction.

This reporting period also reflects a more realistic ‘business as usual’ picture following several years of disruption due to the Covid pandemic.

Our emissions calculations cover Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and Scope 3 emissions where data is currently available. We include all seven Kyoto Protocol Greenhouse Gas groups in our emission footprint figures.

Baseline year emissions: 01/12/22 – 30/11/23
EMISSIONS TOTAL (tCO2e)
102.46
Scope 1 11.93
Scope 2 5.25
N.B we do not use refrigerants or cooling at our premises or during our operations.
Scope 3

Upstream transportation and distribution 0.00
As an independent fleet management company, the service we provide is the administration of vehicle fleets and car benefit schemes. We do not purchase or control the actual vehicles. These are owned by leasing companies who are responsible for transportation and maintenance operations. We have not therefore reported on this area of Scope 3 emissions as we do not transport or distribute any purchased products.

Energy usage working from home 0.641

Waste generated in operations 0.756
This figure does not include the optional emissions from transportation of waste.

Downstream transportation and distribution 0.00
As we provide an administration service only, we do not sell a product that can be transported/ distributed. As such, we have not reported on this area of Scope 3 emissions.

Emissions reduction targets

This is the first year we have worked with an independent organisation to conduct a carbon audit across the business. The process has enabled us to calculate and verify our annual carbon footprint, providing a certified baseline from which to continue our emissions reduction journey.

We have already taken major steps over the last three years to reduce our emissions, primarily by minimising business travel and reviewing our business operations.

To continue our progress, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets with the aim of halving our current emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

This will require a reduction of 7.14% (7.31 tCO2e) each year to 2030 and a further reduction of 2.5% (2.56 tCO2e) thereafter to 2050.

These targets are illustrated in the graph below:

Carbon reduction projects

Completed carbon reduction initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since 2020. As 2022/23 is the first year we have established a verified emissions baseline, we do not have the data to evaluate the effectiveness of these initiatives. Going forward, we will put measures in place where practically possible.

In June 2023, Knowles Fleet was re-awarded a Silver Award from EcoVadis, the world’s largest provider of business sustainability ratings.

  • Working in partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain, in February 2023 we offset our annual carbon footprint against verified renewable projects across to the world to become a Carbon Neutral Business.

  • Replaced in person meetings with video conferencing. Where travel is essential, we have increased the use of electric vehicles, car sharing and public transport.

  • Encouraged more flexible working options and car sharing where possible to reduce employee commuting.

  • We continue to support staff to upgrade their cars to newer, less polluting vehicles (ideally electric or hybrid) through our own car benefit scheme.

  • Installed electric vehicle charge points at our head office to encourage increased staff take up of EVs, either through our car scheme or private purchase.

  • Introduced paperless invoicing, eliminating an estimated 1,000 paper invoices each week.

  • All company software and hardware is hosted in the ISO 14001 accredited Redcentric London Datacentre which is powered by 100% renewable electricity and biodiesel.

  • To help offset our environmental impact we have planted 2,000 trees in a 10-acre area of woodland. Once mature, the trees will absorb approximately 125 tCO2e annually.

  • Installed LED lighting across our head office with automatic shut off to reduce electricity use.

  • The energy efficiency rating of all replacement office equipment is a key factor in purchasing decisions.

In the future we hope to implement further measures:

  • Introduce an electric pool car for business travel.

  • Switch to a renewable electricity supplier when our current fixed rate tariff ends in October 2024.

  • As a rural business, evaluate our options to replace our current oil heating system with a new low carbon, futureproof alternative.

  • For 2023/24, introduce an improved waste management programme to record business waste and disposal, build awareness amongst staff of the impact of their actions and take further steps to reduce waste from our operations.

  • Replace our current main server with a smaller, more energy efficient model.

  • Install hand dryers at our head office to eliminate the use of paper towels.

  • Achieve ISO 14001 accreditation for 2024.

  • To meet a more ambitious net zero target of 2040 in line with NHS Wales’ goal and ahead of NHS England’s 2045 objective.
